{"id":447,"date":"2018-07-09T08:57:04","date_gmt":"2018-07-09T08:57:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.woodcocklanedentalcare.co.uk\/news\/?p=447"},"modified":"2018-07-09T08:57:04","modified_gmt":"2018-07-09T08:57:04","slug":"protect-your-smile-in-the-sun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.woodcocklanedentalcare.co.uk\/news\/uncategorized\/protect-your-smile-in-the-sun\/","title":{"rendered":"Protect Your Smile In The Sun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is more to dentistry than just teeth.\u00a0 Here, at Woodcock Lane Dental Care, we care about the health of your whole mouth.\u00a0 That is why our latest advice is to always apply sunscreen to your lips when out and about in the sun.\u00a0 This will help to protect you from lip cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Actinic cheilitis, also known as solar chelitis, sailor&#8217; lip or farmer&#8217;s lip is a precancerous condition caused by damage to the outer layer of the lip&#8217;s skin. \u00a0The condition itself is not considered a serious health concern, but it does increases the risk of skin cancer.\u00a0 It more commonly affects the lower lip and adult males.\u00a0\u00a0The condition\u00a0may present itself as dry, cracked lips.<\/p>\n<p>Actinic cheilitis may be caused by exposure to strong sunlight or extreme weather. The lip epithelium is less pigmented and also thinner than the outer layer of the facial skin next to it. This makes it far more vulnerable to damage from the ultraviolet rays of the sun.\u00a0 Excessive or chronic exposure to ultraviolet radiation found in sunlight, can damage lip cell DNA and cause abnormalities.\u00a0 Actinic cheilitis occurs when these abnormalities cause dry, scaly patches to form on the border of the lip.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"causes\" class=\"anchor\"><\/span><!--[MMR]--><!--[END MMR]--><\/p>\n<p>The main causes and risk factors of actinic cheilitis are:\u00a0 chronic sun exposure, severe sunburn, oral sex, fair skin, out door jobs, smoking, excessive alcohol and immune disorders.<\/p>\n<p>Our advice to help prevent this is to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid excessive or long-term unprotected sun exposure.<\/li>\n<li>Apply\u00a0sunscreen to the body and face daily, including lips, even if not spending a long time outside<\/li>\n<li>Apply\u00a0lip balms or moisturizers that contain sunscreen, frequently throughout the day, especially when in the sun<\/li>\n<li>Wear\u00a0a wide-brimmed hat and light, long-sleeved clothing in the sun<\/li>\n<li>Stop\u00a0smoking or chewing tobacco<\/li>\n<li>Avoid\u00a0excessive alcohol use<\/li>\n<li>Avoid\u00a0tanning beds<\/li>\n<li>Get\u00a0prompt, appropriate treatment for\u00a0human papilloma virus\u00a0or wart virus<\/li>\n<li>Keep\u00a0hydrated, especially when in the sun<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have any sore patches or ulcers on your lips, mouth, tongue or cheeks that are white and\/or red that do not heal with in three weeks please make an appointment to see your dentist for further advice.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"monetate_selectorHTML_d31299e8_0\" class=\"monetate_selectorHTML_d31299e8\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"survey-form\">\n<h6><\/h6>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is more to dentistry than just teeth.\u00a0 Here, at Woodcock Lane Dental Care, we care about the health of your whole mouth.\u00a0 That is why our latest advice is to always apply sunscreen to your lips when out and about in the sun.\u00a0 This will help to protect you from lip cancer.
